Schritt 6: Besandung der Untergründe

Nachdem die Spachtelmasse durchgetrocknet ist, kann man den Untergrund besanden, bzw. "beerden". Für Harad und Rohan habe ich Sand gewählt, beim Waldboben habe ich mich für richtige Erde entschieden. Wie das Ergebnis wird, zeigt sich... Eigentlich braucht man das ja nicht weiter ausführen, Leim drauf und Erde hinterher, aber da ich mit dem Leim immer verschiedene Muster mache... :-D

Step 6: Sanding the Underfloors

After the filler dried out I could go on with sand or soil. For Harad and Rohan I used Sand, for the forest I wanted to try out real soil.  How the result will look... I don't know. Normally there is nothing  spectacular about glueing sand on a base but as I love doing different patterns with the glue... :-D

Schritt 7: Detaaaails

Da ich wie schon gesagt für Harad einen Brunnen geplant habe, habe ich mir auf das Fundament einen Innenring aus Pappe gebaut, um den ich von außen Steine aus Milliput legen will. Damit ich ihn vernünftig festkleben konnte, habe ich so kleine Klebestellen mit ausgeschnitten.

Step 7: Deeeetails

Because I, as mentioned before, planned a fountain for the Harad plate I build an internal ring wich I will put single stones out of Milliput around. To be able to glue it on the foundation I made little glueing points.

Dann habe ich mit einem Haus für die Rohanplatte begonnen. Aus Platzgründen habe ich mich nur für eine Fassade entschieden, diese dafür aber recht aufwändig gestaltet. Zuerst habe ich den Rohbau aus Pappe gebaut.

Then I started a house for the Rohan plate. Because of space problems I decided to do only a facade. First I build the basic out of cardboard.

 

Dann habe ich begonnen, dieses mit Balsaholz zu verkleiden.

After that I started to cover the cardboard with balsa wood.

Für das Reetdach habe ich einen alten Besen auseinandergenommen. Die Borsten habe ich zerschnitten und dann büschelweise stufig aufgeklebt, um ein möglichst realistisches Ergebnis zu bekommen. Für das erste Mal bin ich eigentlich recht zufrieden.

For the thatched roof I used an old broom. I glued the cutted bristels in bunches and layered on the roof to reach a realistic result. For my first try I am pretty pleased.

Ein Nachteil daran ist der Zeitaufwand. Ich habe fast den ganzen Nachmittag an der Häuserfassade gesessen... Und bevor Ihr Euren alten Besen zerschneidet, guckt, ob Ihr noch einen anderen habt...

A bad thing about this method is the time. I worked almost the hole afternoon on the facade... And before cutting your old broom, take a look whether you have another one...

Schritt 8: Noch eine Probeaufnahme

Ohne große Worte noch eine schnelle Probeaufnahme. Das Haus ist natürlich noch nicht fertig.

Einfache / Easy Foto Station

Hallo, nachdem HerrVonMoria und MarcK von Jomada sowie Frank Becker auf seinem Blog immer wieder geniale szenische Fotos ihrer Miniaturen gezeigt haben, war es schon länger mein Wunsch, mir eine Art "Foto Station" zu basteln, mit der ich relativ einfach auch solche Bilder versuchen kann. Ich hatte erst etwas sehr großes und edles aus Holz geplant, mich dann aber heute Abend für eine einfache Version entschieden, die leicht zu bauen ist. Falls irgendjemand sie nachbauen will, ist hier ein Schritt-für-Schritt Durchlauf. Ob man damit am Ende gute Fotos hinbekommt, weiß ich noch nicht, da die Fotostation im Moment in dem Stadium ist, welches Ihr am Ende dieses Postes seht.

Hello, after having seen lots of scenic miniature fotos by HerrVonMoria and MarcK from Jomada and by Frank Becker (take a look at his Blog) I had for a longer time the wish to build kind of "foto station" that would make it possible for me to try similar pictures.First I had planned to do something big and noble made out of wood but decided this evening to make something easy that is easy to build. If anyone wants to do it as well, here is a step-by-step guide. At the moment I don't know whether I will be able to take good pictures with it, because it is in the stage you can see at the end of this post.



Schritt 1: Vermutete Materialien

Hier einmal eine Auflistung der Dinge, die ich vermute gebrauchen zu können, ich habe bestimmt etwas vergessen ;-)

1. Ein altes Paket
2. Irgendeinen austauschbaren Untergrund, in meinem Fall sind es die Böden von Orangenkästen kombiniert mit Pappe...
3. Einen Fotohintergrund
4. Spachtelmasse o.ä.
5. Holz- / Bastelleim
6. Farben, in meinem Fall Abtönfarben aus dem Baumarkt
7. Alle möglichen Basegestaltungsmittel

Step 1: Assumed Materials

This is a list of the things I suppose I'll need. There are probably some things I forgot ;-)

1. An old package
2. Anything you can use as an underground, I chose the bottom of orange boxes combined with cardboard...
3. A background for you picture
4. Surfacer or similar things
5. Wood glue or similar products
6. Colours, I use tinting paints from a DIY-store
7. Everything you use for basing

Schritt 2: Das Paket

Da man die Miniaturen bei szenischen Bildern nicht von schräg oben fotografiert, sondern eher auf Augenhöhe, habe ich die Vorderseite des Kartons ein wenig zurechtgeschnitten. Ich habe darauf geachtet, dass man ihn aber trotzdem noch schließen kann.

Step 2: The package

Because you don't fotograph the miniatures from above but from the front I cutted out a piece from the front side of the package. I considered that I am still able to close it.

Schritt 3: Der Untergrund

Da ich verschiedene Armeen mit verschiedenen Bases habe, wollte ich den Untergrund (und den Hintergrund) austauschbar machen. Dazu habe ich mir zuerst mehrere Teile der gleichen Größe gesucht und, da diese Löcher hatten, mit Pappe beklebt. Das kann man sicherlich schöner machen, ich wollte aber nicht soviel Zeit hier hineininvestieren.

Because I have different armys with different bases, I wanted to make the subfloor (and the foto background) modular. So I searched for several pieces with the same size and, as the had holes, glued cardboard on them. I am sure that this can be solved better, but I didn't want to loose too much time.

Schritt 4: Die Geländeform

Wenn man die Bases auf den Fotos nicht sehen will, braucht man natürlich etwas im Vordergrund. Ich habe also im Vordergrund einen Hügel aus Spachtelmasse gebastelt, in den ich gleich Schiefer eingearbeitet habe.
Damit der Übergang zwischen Gelände und Hintergrundbild fließender ist, habe ich zum Teil im Hintergrund auch einen Hügel eingefügt.

Step 4: The landscape

If you want to hide the bases in the picture you need something in the foreground. So I shaped a little hill out of surfacer and I included some slate. To smooth the gap between the landscape and the background I  added a hill on the rear side, too.

Schritt 5: Kleiner Test

Um zu sehen, ob die Base auch wirklich verschwindet, habe ich einmal ein Testbild mit einer unbemalten Miniatur gemacht. Da ich mit dem Ergebnis recht zufrieden war, habe ich es so gelassen.

Step 5: Little test

To see whether the base is hidden I took a test picture with an unpainted miniature. As I was pleased with it I went on.

Schritt 6: Weitere Untergründe

Da ich wie gesagt mehrere Untergründe machen wollte, habe ich mich gefragt, wie ich diese ein wenig individualisieren könnte.
Der im Vordergrund ist für Harad, ich habe ein paar Schieferstückchen und ein Fundament für einen Brunnen hinzugefügt. Der Brunnen kommt später noch.
Der Mittlere Untergrund soll ein Waldstück sein, ich habe hier mal Steine aus Kork ausprobiert. Ansonsten werde ich wahrscheinlich noch einen Baum hinzufügen.
Der hintere soll für Rohan sein, da ich im Hintergrund Häuser / Häuserfassaden geplant habe, habe ich den hinteren Hügel weggelassen.

Step 6: More underfloors

As I wanted to build several underfloors I wondered how I could personalize them.
The one in the foreground is for Harad, I added little pieces of slate and a foundation for a fountain I'll build.
The one in the middle shall become a forrest. I tried to make stones out of cork. Apart from this I'll probably add a tree.
The one in the background is for Rohan. Because I plan houses / facades I didn't do the rear hill.

Gandalf auf Karren / Gandalf on cart

Hallo allerseits,

ich habe gestern Gandalf auf Karren von Citadel fertiggestellt. Es handelt sich noch um die Zinnversion, die Brücke stammt von eBob-Miniatures und ist das Weihnachtsgeschenk für meinen Vater. Die Bilder hat netterweise ein Freund von mir gemacht, an dieser Stelle vielen Dank!

Hello everyone,

I finished Gandalf on cart from Citadel yesterday. The model is the old tin version, the bridge was done by eBob-Miniatures and it is a Christmas Gift for my dad. The pictures took a friend of mine, thanks for that!

 Dieses Jahr wird wahrscheinlich nichts mehr kommen, ich bin immer noch dabei, das Diorama von der Bruinenfurt fertigzustellen, also...

This year there will probably not come any progress as I am still working on the diorama of the ford of Bruinen so...

Gandalf Sockel / Plinth

Ich bin mit dem Sockel für Gandalf auf Karren fertig geworden. Der Sockel und die Brücke stammen von eBob - Miniatures. Ich hatte das Glück, den letzten Sockel zu erwischen...
Leider sieht man von den Wassereffekten nicht viel, sie sind aber vorhanden. ;-)

I have finished a display plinth for Gandalf on cart. The brigde and the plinth are made by eBob-miniatures and I was happy to get the last one with the plinth.
Unfortunately the water effects are not vizible, but they exist. ;-)

Anleitung: Vom Draht zur Baumarmatur / Tutorial: From wire to a tree armature

Mit dieser Anleitung möchte ich Euch zeigen, wie ich meine Baumarmaturen aus Draht selber herstelle. In einem zweiten Teil, erkläre ich dann die Schritte von der Baumarmatur zum fertigen Baum.

In this tutorial I would like to show you my way of building tree armatures. In a second part I'll explain the steps to the finished tree.

Benötigte Materialien:
- Draht
- 1 Kneifzange
- Geduld
- evtl. ein paar Pflaster ;-)

Needed Materials:
- wire
- pincers
- patience
- maybe some plasters

Schritt 1:

Zuerst muss man die Baumart, die Baumgröße und die Baumdicke festlegen. Danach richtet sich die benötigte Menge und Länge an Draht.
Dann schneidet man entsprechend viele ca. gleichlange Stücke Draht ab, die doppelt so lang sind, wie der Baum (mit Ästen und Wurzeln!) am Ende werden soll. In meinem Fall habe ich 25 Stücke von ca. 25cm Länge abgekniffen. Diese Stücke werden nun alle in der Mitte geknickt.

Step 1:

First you have to decide which tree species you want to do and how tall and thick it shall become. The lenght and the amount of wire depends on this. 
Then you nip of as many pieces of wire with equal lenght as you need. I cutted 25 pieces of wire with about 25cm per piece. Then kink those pieces in the middle. 

Schritt 2:

Als nächstes nimmt man sich ca. 5-7 Stücke Draht und hält sie mit einer Hand an der Knickstelle fest. Mit der anderen Hand werden die zwei Stränge 2-3 Mal mit einander verdreht. Wichtig ist, dass man beide gleichzeitig dreht, nicht den einen um den anderen. Dieser Vorgang wird mit den restlichen Drahtstücken wiederholt. Je länger man dreht, desto länger werden die Wurzeln.

Step 2:

Next up you take about 5-7 pieces of wire and hold them with your one hand in the middle (at the point where you kinked them). With you other hand you start to twist those two cords 2-3 times around each other. Important: Twist both at the same time, not one around the other! The longer you twist, the longer the roots become.

Schritt 3:

Um den Stamm zu erhalten nimmt man jetzt alle zusammen und fängt an zu drehen. Dies ist mMn der schwierigste Teil, da man viel Draht auf einmal drehen muss. Auch hier kann man den Stamm verlängern, indem man öfter dreht.

Step 3:

To build the stem you take all the wire and start twisting again. IMO this is the most difficult part because you have to twist much wire at the same time. If you want to extend the stem you have to twist longer.

Schritt 4:

Der nächste Schritt sind die Äste. Das ist der langwierigste Teil des ganzen. Um einen Ast zu drehen, nimmt man sich 5-9 Stücke Draht (abhängig von der Gesamtmenge) und fängt an, diese miteinander zu verdrehen. Damit die Äste dicker werden, kann man nachträglich noch Draht hinzufügen, einfach ein passendes Stück abknipsen und mit verdrehen. Dabei immer wieder Verästelungen einbauen und mehr Draht hinzufügen. So bekommt man am Ende eine schön verzweigte, glaubwürdige Baumkrone.

Step 4:

The next step are the branches. This is the part that takes the longest time. To build a branch you take 5-9 pieces of wire (depending on how much you have) and start twisting them around each other. To make them thicker you can just add some more pieces of wire. Just cut off a piece with the right size and twist it together with the wire of the branches. To get a realistic treetop you have to add some ramifications.

Schritt 5:

Als letztes kommen die Wurzeln. Dafür werden einfach die "Schlingen" unten am Baum aufgeschnitten und die einzelnen Drahtstücke genau wie die Äste miteinander verdreht. Zuletzt werden sie dann noch so hingebogen, dass der Baum sicher steht.

Step 5:

Finally there are the roots. Simply cut the "slings" at the bottom of the tree open and twist them the way you did with the branches. The very last step (for the tree armature) is to bend them so that the tree has a good stand.

(Das ist schon ein älterer Baum mit noch nichts so vielen Ästen, meinen neusten hab ich immer noch nicht fertig...)

(This is an older tree with not as many branches, my newest is still not finished...)

Diese Bäume sind sicher nicht geeignet um einen ganzen Wald herzustellen, viel mehr für Einzelminiaturen und Dioramen. Man kann sie aber in die unterschiedlichsten Formen bringen und gerade im Fantasy Bereich ist das ziemlich nützlich (alter Weidenmann...). Sie sind bestimmt auch eine gute Grundlage für Ents, ich probiere da gerade auch noch herum. Im nächsten Teil der Anleitung werde ich mich dann mit der Herstellung der Rinde befassen, ob ich noch auf die Beflockung eingehe weiß ich noch nicht (hab ich noch nicht ausprobiert).

These trees are surely to complex for a whole forest, more for single miniatures and dioramas. The advantage (especially in the fantasy world) is that you can give them the very special look you want (Oldman willow). They are probably very good for Ents as well, I am still playing around with them. In the next part of the tutorial I will show you how I make the bark.
